FAVORED LAURA’S LIGHT TAKES $65,000 SANTA ANITA ALLOWANCE FEATURE BY 1 ½ LENGTHS AS CEDILLO & MILLER TEAM FOR MILE TURF WIN IN 1:34.02

ARCADIA, Calif. (May 2, 2021)–Classy Laura’s Light stalked speedy Quiet Secretary to the top of the lane and gained the advantage in deep stretch to take Sunday’s $65,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by 1 ½ lengths under Abel Cedillo.  Owned by Gary Barber and trained by Peter Miller, Laura’s Light, a three-time graded stakes winner last year, got one mile on turf in 1:34.02.

With apprentice Jessica Pyfer scooting to the early lead from her rail post aboard Quiet Secretary, Laura’s Light appeared well within herself as she tracked her into and around the far turn.  As she drew nearly even at the top of the lane, Quiet Secretary battled back gamely, but Laura’s Light gradually gained the advantage a sixteenth from home.

“She broke well and she was very relaxed,” said Cedillo, who guided her to all of her stakes victories in 2020.  “I knew Jessica was going to go, so I wanted to stay close.  At the top of the stretch, she responded very well.  This was a nice race for her.”

Winless in two starts this year and most recently fifth in the Grade II Royal Heroine going a mile on grass April 3, Laura’s Light was off as the 9-5 favorite in a field of six older fillies and mares and paid $5.80, $3.20 and $2.60.

“This was a good spot for her today,” said Ruben Alvarado, assistant to Miller.  “It’s nice to get a win in her and now Pete can decide what’s next.”

A 4-year-old filly by Constitution out of the Muqtarib mare Light of a Star, Laura’s Light is now six for 11, with five of her wins coming in combination with Cedillo.  With the winner’s share of $39,000, she increased her earnings to $351,770.

A full sister to 2021 Runhappy Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World, She’s Our Charm was handled patiently by Geovanni Franco and was just up to touch Quiet Secretary by a head for second money.  Trained by her owner/breeder, Hall of Famer Ron McAnally, She’s Our Charm was off at 4-1 and paid $4.60 and $3.20.

Trained by Ian Kruljac, Quiet Secretary finished 1 ½ lengths in front of Rocking Redhead and paid $4.00 to show.

Fractions on the race were 23.47, 46.59, 1:10.34 and 1:22.13.
