Left his native Yugoslavia for Canada at the age of 14 … Father directed a large farm with all types of domestic animals, including horses … Moved to California in 1974 and earned a graduate degree from UCLA in kinesiology, the science of movement … Worked in that field four years with professional athletes, including tennis’ Tracy Austin and basketball’s Jamaal Wilkes, Bill Walton and Kiki Vandeweghe … Was encouraged to apply his knowledge to the development of Thoroughbred horses … Became a partner in a horse with several professional athletes in 1976 … Horse was assigned to trainer Rafael Martinez, who began tutoring Cerin in the matter of training horses … Took out first trainer’s license in 1981 … First stakes winner was Hollywood Reporter in the 1989 Spotlight Breeders’ Cup at Hollywood Park; first $100,000 stakes winner was Exploding Prospect in the 1989 Affirmed Handicap, also at Hollywood … Had his best year in 2000 with more than $3.7 million in purses and five graded stakes wins, the year’s best effort coming when former claimer Early Pioneer triumphed in the $1-million Hollywood Gold Cup … Saddled Rushaway Stakes winner Ronton in 2000 Kentucky Derby (18th) … Won training titles in 1994 and ’95 at Fairplex Park … Among his stakes winners are Treekster, Luftikus, Archer City Slew, Musical Gambler, To Be Khaled, Silken Magic, Tanja, Rotsaluck, Casey Griffin, Robledo, Even the Score, Designed for Luck and Twice As Bad … Enjoyed another successful year in 2005 with stable earnings of more than $2.8 million, led by Del Mar Horse of the Meeting and turf star Willow O Wisp, winner of the La Jolla Handicap and Del Mar Derby, setting a course record of 1:45.85 for nine furlongs in the latter triumph. Also contributing to the barn’s 2005 success was Super Frolic, victor in the Hawthorne Gold Cup … Suffered personal tragedy early in ’07 when wife Kellie died after being injured in a fall during a family vacation in Mexico … Family: one daughter; three sons.
