Daughter of Northwest trainer Jim Walsh has been around the horse industry since the age of 8 … Obtained assistant trainer’s license in 1962 and took over father’s stable when he died in 1970 … Recalls that women weren’t really accepted in the training world in those days, “but I didn’t have a lot of the same problems others had because of my father” … Fondly remembers the late Buster Millerick as her mentor … Married in 1980 and was out of racing for five years … After marriage ended, moved new stable to the Midwest for several years before returning to Seattle area and eventually relocating to the Southern California circuit … In 1979, won Steve O’Donnell Memorial Award given to Longacres trainer displaying leadership, cooperation, sportsmanship and excellence on and off the track … Graded stakes won: Las Cienegas and Monrovia Handicaps, both Grade III events at Santa Anita, and Oak Tree’s Grade III Senator Ken Maddy with Evening Promise, all in 2000; Grade III Senorita Stakes at Hollywood Park with Islay Miss, also in 2000; Grade I Santa Monica Handicap at Santa Anita with Nany’s Sweep in 2001; Grade II Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes with Blazonry in 2003; and Grade II Oak Tree Derby with Devious Boy, also in 2003 … Other stakes wins include 2003 Oceanside Stakes at Del Mar with Devious Boy; Longacres’ Governor’s Handicap with Auguste in 1974; Henry P. Russell Handicap at Oak Tree in 1999; Turf Paradise Derby with White Hot in 1997 and Paradise Mile Handicap at Turf Paradise with Ward Hunt in 1999 … Dominated the training scene at Seattle’s Longacres racetrack in the 1970s when she was leading training at four race meetings … Won 11 stakes races at Longacres in two seasons during the 1990s … Was leading trainer at Canterbury Downs in Minnesota in 1987 and 1988 while racing as Kathy Hutchinson … Her trainee, Hanuman Highway, lost 1998 Arkansas Derby by a head to eventual Belmont Stakes winner Victory Gallop and finished seventh behind Real Quiet in that year’s Kentucky Derby … Has gone to Breeders’ Cup championship day once, with her Boundless Moment finishing ninth to Lit de Justice in the 1996 Sprint … Single.
