Has been a major player in West Coast racing for more than 45 years … In 1986, trained Eclipse Award winners Snow Chief (top 3-year-old colt or gelding) and Brave Raj (top 2-year-old filly) … That year Snow Chief won Florida Derby, Santa Anita Derby, Preakness Stakes and Jersey Derby; following year won Oaklawn Handicap and Strub Stakes before retiring as California’s all-time money winner ($3,383,210), though he was subsequently passed by Best Pal … In her championship year, Brave Raj won Del Mar Debutante and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies … Pulled off a major score when the durable and talented filly Very Subtle beat a fine field of males that included heavy favorite Groovy in the 1987 Breeders’ Cup Sprint … Her multiple-graded stakes history also showed victories in the Hollywood Starlet, La Brea, Las Flores and Santa Ynez stakes … Saddled his first winner, Egg Nog, at Portland Meadows in 1947 … First major stakes win came in 1961 when First Balcony won The Californian at Hollywood Park … Has a reputation for running his horses often and yet keeping them in form for long periods of time … Perhaps gets more out of modestly bred horses than most of his conditioning colleagues and for that reason is called by his older brother, Warren, “the miracle man” … Has kept many of his owners for a lifetime in the business … His 26 winners is good enough for 10th place on Del Mar’s all-time list of stakes winners … Ranks sixth all-time for wins at the seashore with 289 firsts heading into 2007 season, his 53rd at the seaside track … His other stakes winners include Perfect Moon, winner of 2003 Best Pal Stakes; Commissary, Telly’s Pop, Real Connection, College Town, Klassy Kim, Score Quick, Double Discount, Funontherun and Buffythecenterfold … Won two stakes during ’06 with Quick Little Miss … Started as a groom in 1945 at Santa Anita for trainer Yorky McLeod, for whom brother Warren galloped horses before also turning to training … Brothers are regulars each morning in the backstretch kitchen at Del Mar where they are joined by a regular cast of characters … Management at Hollywood Park renamed its clubhouse bar the “Mel Stute Bar” … Became first inductee into Fairplex Park Hall of Fame in 2003 … Made a successful comeback from quadruple heart bypass surgery in December 2000 … Family: wife, Annabelle; two daughters; one son, Gary, who serves as his assistant and has a stable of his own.
