Tied with D. Wayne Lukas and Richard Mandella for leading trainer at Del Mar in 1990, but came back to win the title outright in 1994 … Had his most successful year ever in 2001 when his horses earned $2,762,746 … Was leading trainer at the Oak Tree-at-Santa Anita meet for two consecutive years, 2000 and 2001 … Deals mostly in claiming horses, and has made a reputation for himself over the years as one who can take a claimer and move it up — way up in some cases … One of those cases was Exchange, who was claimed for $50,000 in the second race of her career … She went on to win three Grade I races, more than $1 million and a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in 1992 … Claimed Sensational Star for $32,000 and the horse made that back tenfold, winning both the Bing Crosby and Pat O’Brien handicaps at Del Mar in 1990 … My Sonny Boy, claimed for $62,500, won the $300,000 California Cup Classic in 1990 … Restage, haltered for $12,500, also became a stakes winner … Saddled the super-quick filly Enjoy the Moment for four stakes wins in 1999 — including Del Mar’s Rancho Bernardo — but she couldn’t hold on after making the lead against the colts in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Gulfstream Park … Other stakes winners include Potrimagic, Valiant Wonder, Saratoga Gambler, Mister Gennaro, Kitty On The Track, Drouilly’s Boy, Ladylore, Desiraes My Candy and Bordonaro. The last-named has been one of the nation’s finest speedsters for the past couple of years, winning three sprint stakes in 2006, including the Grade I Ancient Title B.C. Stakes at Oak Tree prior to running fourth to champion Thor’s Echo in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Churchill Downs … This year, Bordonaro won Oaklawn Park’s Count Fleet Speed Handicap for the second time … Twice was leading trainer at the big Santa Anita meet (’91 and ’96) … Had a close and successful association with jockey Laffit Pincay, Jr., the now-retired former world’s winningest rider. When Pincay won five races on Cal Cup Day in October 2000 to move beyond the 9,000 winner plateau, two of those wins were on Spawr-trained horses, Shivareen Sky and Hightened Awareness … Has worked around the racetrack since he was a high schooler … Was an assistant blacksmith, managed a veterinary clinic and worked as an assistant trainer to Joe Manzi … Single.
