In 2006 he achieved a personal best in earnings with $3,954,933 and nearly topped his mark for winners with 189 victories. The previous year he posted 193 wins which led to earnings of $3,368,732 … The career-topping win totals were seventh best in North America for the past two years and the earnings figures put the trainer solidly in the top 30 … Of late has extended his operation into Southern California after previously racing mostly in Northern California … Has been the runner-up at six Northern California meets since 2001; four Bay Meadows meets – 2005 winter-spring, 2004 fall and spring, 2001 spring; Golden Gate Fields – 2004-2005 winter meeting and 2003-2004 season … Overall, has ranked in the top five trainers at every major meet in Northern California since 2000 … Reached career milestone in January 2005 when he saddled his 1,500th winner, Mountain Mustang … Has trained numerous stakes winners, with Lykatill Hil being a standout … That runner captured the 1992 California Juvenile Stakes, 1994 Del Mar Breeders’ Cup Handicap, Windy Sands Handicap and 1995 William P. Kyne Handicap … Former $50,000 claimer Siren Lure was one of the nation’s top sprinters in 2006, winning five stakes including the Triple Bend Handicap, Sherman’s first Grade I success in 27 years as a conditioner, plus the Los Angeles ‘Cap and Del Mar’s Pat O’Brien ‘Cap, earning a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint in which he was eighth to Thor’s Echo … Also won Del Mar’s CERF Handicap with Fancee Bargain in 2003 … Other stakes winners for the former jockey: Lindsay Jean, 2003 Brown Bess Handicap; Perfec Travel, 1988 Triple Bend Handicap; as well as Presidio Heights, My Captain, Amanda’s Affair, Tahoe City, My Michele, Let Fly, King’s Bet, Haveasilverbullet, Easy Come Easy Go, Jillyball, Rickrack, Julietiquette and Carthage … Moved to Southern California from New York as a youngster and went to work on the racetrack in 1953 for Rex Ellsworth … Accompanied Swaps to Churchill Downs for his victorious run in the 1955 Kentucky Derby and to Chicago for the storied match race with Nashua … Began riding at Hollywood Park in 1957 and won his first race at Caliente that year … Rode later in Florida and the Midwest before returning to Southern California in 1968 and then on to the Bay Area tracks … Retired from riding in 1978 and took an assistant trainer’s post with Paul Guidotti … Took out his trainer’s license in 1980 after a brief stint as a racing official … Family: wife, Faye; two sons, who serve as his assistants -- Alan, who usually handles the Del Mar string, and Steve, who spends nearly all of his time with the horses based in Northern California.
