It was the trainer’s third success in a Breeders’ Cup race … Left home at 16 during political unrest in his native land … Came to the United States with $600 in his pocket and began walking hots for trainer Tommy Doyle … Took out trainer’s license in 1968 … Trainee Martial Law won 1989 Santa Anita Handicap at 51-1, second-longest-priced Big ’Cap winner … Took a training leave of absence from 1993 to 1997, then came back strong … Won his second $1-million race in the 1999 Breeders’ Cup Mile at Gulfstream Park when Silic (at 7-1) got up by a neck … Won the B.C. Mile once more in 2001 with the talented, but touchy, Val Royal … In 1999, he ran one-two in Hollywood Park’s Grade I Shoemaker Breeders’ Cup Mile on turf with Silic and Ladies Din; then in 2000 he did the same thing in the race with the same horses in an unprecedented feat … Won the Shoemaker again in 2002 with the big gelding Ladies Din … Ladies Din won the Grade I Eddie Read Handicap in 2000 at Del Mar … Same horse had been voted Horse of the Meeting at Del Mar in 1998 when he swept the track’s 3-year-old grass series … Trainer captured the Eddie Read once more in 2003 with Special Ring in a course-record performance (1:45.87) and, amazingly, the same horse came back in 2004 and won again in almost identical time, 1:45.90 … He also campaigned Del Mar’s Horse of the Meeting in 2004, Blackdoun, who swept a division of the Oceanside Stakes, the La Jolla Handicap and the Del Mar Derby, only the second horse in history to win the three-race series of turf events for 3-year-olds. The first was another Canani horse, the aforementioned Ladies Din, in 1998 … Had much success with his claims, notably Ladies Din, Willmar, Silver Circus and Davie’s Lamb, all of whom he moved up into the ranks of major stakes winners … Among his other stakes winners are Tranquility Lake, a three-time stakes winner at Del Mar; Regal Thunder, Astarabad, Brujo, Patchy Groundfog, Putting, Maria Jesse, Tuzla, Nazirali, Silent Sighs, Amorama, winner of the 2004 Del Mar Oaks in stakes record time and the 2005 John C. Mabee Handicap, plus recent major stakes-winners Shining Energy, Attima, Dixie Meister and Charmo … Family: wife, Svetlana; two daughters; one son, Nick, also a trainer.
