Comes from a long line of Chilean-born trainers of Thoroughbreds including father, Vincent, and grandfather, Pedro, who twice won the Chilean Triple Crown … Older brother, Pedro, is a trainer in Chile … Marcelo was born and lived on the track at Club Hipico, the premier racing venue in Santiago, Chile … Moved to the United States in 1977 at 16 and worked for 10 years for Hall of Fame trainer Ron McAnally, while brother-in-law Eduardo Inda served as McAnally’s chief assistant … Later worked for trainers Julio Canani and Robert Frankel before taking a job for 10 years as private trainer for Argentine owner Roberto Posternack … Everest Stable was key to Polanco’s string of horses, especially the fine racemare Island Fashion, who gave him his first Grade I victory with a win in Santa Anita’s La Brea Stakes in 2003 … She added another Grade I with victory in Santa Anita’s Santa Monica Handicap in 2004, and — less than six weeks later — nearly became the first distaffer to win the Santa Anita Handicap when she finished second … Also won Oak Tree’s Lady’s Secret en route to a fifth-place finish in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Distaff … Polanco saddled Culture Clash to 10th place in the 2004 Juvenile Fillies; made Breeders’ Cup debut in 2003 with 11th-place finisher Mambo Train in the Juvenile … Has won two stakes at Del Mar — the 1996 Sorrento with Desert Digger and the 2000 CTBA with Euro Empire … Made a huge impression in the late 1990s by claiming The Barking Shark for $50,000 and earning more than $500,000 with him, including runner-up finishes in the 1996 Del Mar Derby and Super Derby and the 1997 Strub Stakes … 2005 stakes victories included Very Vegas in Hollywood Park’s Curious Clover, She Sings in the Arizona Oaks and Night Patrol in the Turf Paradise B.C. Handicap … Family: wife, Patty, who has been a clocker at Del Mar and Hollywood Park; one daughter; one son.
