At 21, could have become youngest trainer — and first female — to win the Kentucky Derby in 2004 when her first Derby starter, stakes winner Imperialism, finished a late-running third to Smarty Jones in the Run for the Roses … Gray colt came back in the Preakness Stakes to finish fifth … She has an extensive background with horses and has been training on her own since she was 19 … Very much a hands-on conditioner and she gallops many of her own horses each day … Father, Richard, was a longtime trainer and for several years served as racing manager and president of the late Prince Ahmed bin Salman’s The Thoroughbred Corp … Kristin grew up practically on Santa Anita’s backstretch — the family home was not more than a couple of furlongs away … Often sighted leaning on the rail while she watched her father’s Thoroughbreds doing their work in the mornings … Made name in the show ring and as a jumps rider; qualified to become member of Young Riders, sort of a prelude to a possible spot on the U.S. Olympic equestrian team … Things changed quickly, however, after she sustained an injury in 2001 when a sharp object punctured her arm as she hung up some tack … The arm became infected and sent her to the sidelines for a long recovery … While recuperating that summer, galloped horses at Del Mar for trainer John Shirreffs, who conditioned a number of runners for Prince Ahmed … Though her father didn’t want her to follow in his footsteps to the rugged life of the backstretch, she says she knew all along that that’s what she would do … In June 2002 took and passed the test to become a Thoroughbred trainer … That was about six weeks before her 20th birthday … Started with three horses that summer at Hollywood Park and won her first race when Atarama scored on the Jimmy Durante Turf Course … Won two stakes at Del Mar in 2005 – Pat O’Brien Handicap with Imperialism and the Harry F. Brubaker Handicap with Running Free … Imperialism later ran eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint … Other stakes winners have included Tronare, Statement, Alyzig, Sentimental Value, Puerto Banus, Mister Acpen, Californian and Cheiron … Single.
