Miller started going to the races with his father at 8 years old. He wanted to be a jockey, so at age 10 spent a year at jockey school in Castaic, California. When doctors told his family that he would grow too big to be a jockey, he decided to become a trainer. During high school he worked as a groom and hot walker. After graduation, Miller went to work full-time for the late Charlie Whittingham and rubbed horses. During his tenure with Whittingham, he groomed major stakes winners, such as, Greinton and Palace Music, better known as the sire of two-time Horse of the Year, Cigar. Miller passed his trainer's test and started his stable about 23 years ago. He saddled his first winner, Dynashield, on April 25, 1988, at Santa Anita with Gary Stevens in the saddle. Miller is based at Hollywood Park for the majority of the year and relocates to Del Mar Racetrack for the summer meet. Among his best runners: Comma to the Top, multiple stakes winner including the Grade I CashCall Futurity; Set Play, winner of the Grade I Del Mar Debutante; Fast Parade, winner of the Grade II Nearctic Stakes at Woodbine Racecourse in Canada; Thoroughly, winner of Hollywood Park’s Willard Proctor Stake; sprinter Backbackbackgone, a multiple-stakes winner who won five of his first eight starts; Many of the young horses he has developed and trained have come from his dedication and meticulous attention to detail at the yearling and 2 year old in training sales… Married.
