Became Del Mar’s all-time winningest trainer in 1998, passing long-time leader Farrell Jones (374 wins); coming into the 2007 meeting McAnally has 426 firsts … Entered 2007 with lifetime marks of 2,489 victories and $117,873,987, fifth all-time for earnings … Scored his biggest Del Mar victory in 2003 when Candy Ride won the $1-million Pacific Classic … Voted into racing’s Hall of Fame in 1990 … Also being inducted at the same time was his foremost equine star, John Henry, the 1981 and ’84 Horse of the Year and for several years the top money earner among all Thoroughbreds at $6.5 million … Trainer won his third Eclipse Award as the nation’s outstanding conditioner in 1992, after winning earlier in 1981 and 1991 … Has won four Breeders’ Cup races, the Distaff twice with Bayakoa and once with Paseana, and the Turf with Northern Spur … Bayakoa and Paseana were two-time Eclipse winners and Northern Spur collected one … Another Eclipse winner for the trainer was Tight Spot as top older grass runner of 1991, a year in which he won eight straight turf races … John Henry picked up six Eclipses … During his career, the nondescript gelding with the huge heart won 12 Santa Anita stakes, including two Big ’Caps and three Oak Tree Invitationals … Won two Arlington Millions, his first in 1981 making him the first horse to win a million-dollar race; won again in 1984 … Trainer has won nine races worth $1 million or more … Was raised in an orphanage in Northern Kentucky with two younger brothers and two sisters … Got his start at Rockingham Park for uncle, Reggie Cornell, who later trained come-from-behind legend Silky Sullivan … Posted first training win in 1958 … Among his many fine runners, some might have been considered cast-offs, including the obscurely-bred John Henry, parrot-mouthed Bayakoa, one-eyed Cassaleria, $1,500 purchase Silver Ending and the tail-less Sea Cadet … Among other top horses: Donut King, Olympio, Super Moment, Different, On Target, Future Quest, Call Now, Antespend, Valiant Nature, Mr Purple, Listening, Festin, Hawkster, Toda Una Dama, Amerique, Bonapartiste, Olympic Charmer, Queens Court Queen, Brave Act, Tout Charmant, Affluent, House of Fortune, Sweet Return, winner of the 2005 Eddie Read Handicap; and Mea Domina, winner of the ’06 Palomar B.C. Handicap in course record time of 1:39.67 for a mile and one-sixteenth … Has won 72 stakes in 47 seasons at Del Mar, third behind Bob Baffert (77) and Charlie Whittingham (74) … Current stable includes stakes-winning Bonfante and Charm the Giant, whom he trains for his wife … Family: wife, Debbie; three daughters.
