Grew up on a farm in Jalisco in central/western Mexico, but there were many more cows than horses … Says he learned about horses after he came to California to work with Thoroughbreds in 1970 … Started as hot walker for trainer Robert Frankel before moving on to become a groom for the late champion California horseman Farrell “Wild Horse” Jones, father of trainer Gary Jones and grandfather of Martin Jones, who is keeping the family training line going … Eventually, Becerra worked for Gary Jones and alongside Marty Jones as an assistant … His progress went from groom to foreman to assistant trainer … When Gary Jones retired in 1997, Becerra went on his own with seven horses for former Jones clients who came along with him … Richard Mulhall, as racing director for The Thoroughbred Corp., gave him an early boost with nine horses from Saudi Prince Ahmed bin Salman’s huge stable … Now has a full stable of horses in training, ranging from claiming stock to allowance and stakes horses … Major clients include K.K. Sengara and Stan E. Fulton … Among best horses trained: St Averil, a Kentucky Derby prospect in 2004 until sidelined by foot problems; Rahy Dolly, Royal Place, Saint Buddy, Kingdom Found (his first stakes winner), Roll Hennessy Roll, Uncle Denny and Special Matter, who was claimed for $12,500 and ran up approximately $400,000 in purse money while twice placing in stakes … First victory on his own came with the first horse he saddled — Sky Launch at Hollywood Park … Family: wife, Aurora; one daughter; two sons, one of whom, Rafael, Jr., left the world of finance to assist his father in racing.
