Son of longtime and successful trainer Gary Jones and grandson of the late Farrell Jones, a legend in the training business and Del Mar’s all-time leading trainer for titles won with 11 and second to Ron McAnally in overall victories with 374 … Marty Jones served as an assistant to his father and then took on his own stable following his father’s retirement in 1996 … First win as trainer on his own came on May 13, 1996 at Hollywood Park with Made of Jade, owned by his father … His first stakes victory came with Gastronomical in the 1996 Hidden Light Stakes at Hollywood Park … A bit later he scored his first Grade I win when Auriette won Hollywood’s Gamely Handicap … The speedy Hugh Hefner finished sixth in the 2000 Preakness Stakes; he also won the 1999 California Sires Stakes and the 2002 Crystal Water Handicap … Marty Jones, whose trainees compiled earnings of more than $1.5 million in 2006, posted his third stakes victory at Del Mar during the year when El Don captured the California Dreamin’ Handicap … Auriette won the 1997 Osunitas Handicap and Sharekann won the 1997 Solana Beach Handicap, both at Del Mar … Among his best runners was Alphabet Kisses, who was a Grade I and Grade II stakes winner in 2004 and 2005 … When the gray filly won the 2005 A Gleam Handicap, young Jones made it a third-generation sweep of the race; his grandfather won in 1965 with Kea and his dad won in 1993 with Bold Windy … Single.
