Was born to train … Father, Eduardo, uncles and cousins made a name for the family in Chile, training at the tracks in and around its capital, Santiago … Began helping his father at the track at the age of 12 … Was employed as a groom, hot walker and exercise rider … Following father’s death, he worked for his uncle, Jorge Inda … Came to the United States in 1961 at age 18 with a couple of horses bought by longtime horse owner and racing executive at Del Mar and Oak Tree-at-Santa Anita, the late Clement Hirsch … “It was my dream to come here,” says the native of Chile, “so my dream came true.” … Worked for trainer Warren Stute for 10 years after arriving in California … “Warren was my real teacher in this country. He was super to me. He’s been like a father to me,” says Inda … After 10 years, took some time off, returned to Chile and tried for a time to buy and sell horses … Found that he missed being closely involved with training, so returned to U.S. and began working for trainer Ron McAnally, an association that was to last for more than 20 years … McAnally is on his list of great teachers, also, and the two teamed up during the time the McAnally stable produced champions John Henry, Bayakoa and Paseana … Inda did leave for a year to train a small string of horses, including the stakes-winning filly Excitable Lady, for owner Tom Gentry in the Midwest … Been training on his own since 1995, starting as private trainer for 505 Farms and then opening a public stable 18 months later … Handled the champion racemare Riboletta during her Eclipse season in 2000 … Enjoyed success in 2005 with distance-loving grass horse T.H. Approval, winner of the San Juan Capistrano Handicap at Santa Anita. T. H. Approval made it two-in-a-row with another triumph in the 2006 San Juan Capistrano, the first horse to win the distance test two successive years since Niarkos in 1967-68 … Later in 2006 T.H. Approval also won the Sunset Handicap at Hollywood Park and the Del Mar Handicap, thus sweeping Southern California’s series of turf marathons – the first time that had ever been accomplished in one year … Among other stakes horses Inda conditioned since going on his own: Borodislew, India Divina, Toga Toga Toga, Forest Camp, Georgia’s Storm, Tamara Princess, Music’s Storm, T.H. Grace and Irish Minstrel … Became a United States citizen in 1995 … Family: wife, Monica; three daughters.
