Unquestionably most successful trainer ever on the Northern California circuit … The conditioner has won 35 consecutive training championships at Bay Meadows, along with 31 straight across the bay at Golden Gate Fields; has won every Bay Meadows and Golden Gate training title since 1986, an unheard of feat … Became only the sixth trainer in Thoroughbred history to attain the 4,000-winner mark when 4-year-old filly Gonetorule won the sixth race at Bay Meadows on April 15, 2004 … Won career high 308 races in 2004 to rank third in U.S. and his earnings of $6,005,484 placed him 13th nationally … In 2003, his then career high 282 wins were fourth nationally while his earnings of $6,260,305 were ninth best … Was third nationally for winners in 2005 with 281 which moved him into fifth place all-time with 4,527, ahead of D. Wayne Lukas’ 4,366 … Had his best year ever for purses in 1998 when he earned $6.3 million … His 241 wins that year ranked him second in country … His 224 wins in 1999 again were good for second best in nation … His 215 tallies in 2000 ranked fourth best in the country; his 263 in 2001 were third, and his 265 in 2002 were fourth … Decided to branch out in 2001 and took a string of horses to Arlington Park, where he proceeded to win 41 races and become the leading trainer … First came to California in the late 1960s to visit friends and never left … Began working as a groom at Bay Meadows in 1969 and worked in various capacities for trainers Jerry Dutton and Jerry Fanning until he took out his license in 1979 … Success didn’t come easy or early, but did come rather suddenly … Compiled no more than 16 wins in any one of his first six years of training, for a total of 59, but broke out of the pack in 1985 with 56 victories … Beginning with 1986, hasn’t won fewer than 117 races in any year … Known for a long time as a top trainer of claiming horses — and he still dominates that category — but also has handled dozens of stakes winners, notable among them King Glorious, Lite Light, Pike Place Dancer and Event of the Year … King Glorious won the Hollywood Futurity as a 2-year-old and the Ohio Derby and Haskell Stakes as a 3-year-old … Lite Light and Pike Place Dancer won the Kentucky Oaks in 1991 and 1996, respectively … Lite Light went on to win the Coaching Club American Oaks later in 1991 … Has had several tough breaks surrounding the Kentucky Derby: two of his planned starters, Event of the Year in 1998 and Globalize in 2000, were injured in Louisville and didn’t start … In 2002 he took the gray stakes horse U S S Tinosa to Kentucky, but failed to make the money cutoff and wasn’t allowed to run … In 2003, he finally got into the race and his Eye of the Tiger closed well to finish fifth in the Run for the Roses … That colt came back to win Hollywood Park’s Affirmed Handicap … Was on the Triple Crown trail in 2006 with Cause to Believe, winner of the California Derby but 13th to Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby, then went back to Louisville again this year with another California Derby winner, Bwana Bull, who finished 15th behind Street Sense … Other major stakes winners: Variety Road, Shanes Lass, Variety Baby, Media Plan, Traces of Gold, Batroyale, Yougottawanna, Novel Sprite, Ninebanks and Cappuchino … Novel Sprite gets credit for putting the trainer on the map after being claimed for $16,000 and going on to pile up more than $400,000 in earnings … Among his current runners is SomethinaboutLaura, a versatile Irish-bred 5-year-old mare who counts several stakes victories among her 14 lifetime wins, including a triumph over 2006 John C. Mabee Handicap winner Dancing Edie in Hollypark’s ‘07 Redondo Beach Handicap … Others of note in the barn are Eastlake Avenue and Hystericalady … At the end of 2006, ranked fourth all-time in number of wins with 4,761, behind only Dale Baird, Jack Van Berg and King T. Leatherbury … Family: wife, Janet, who is his chief assistant.
