Was introduced to the business by his father, who was an avid fan, and to the backstretch by former trainer Gary Jones, a classmate at Pasadena City College … Registered first victory in 1974 at Santa Anita … Biggest wins in his career came when Alphabet Soup won the 1996 Breeders’ Cup Classic, defeating Louis Quatorze and Cigar; Touch Gold won the ’97 Belmont Stakes to deny Silver Charm, who had won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, racing’s Triple Crown, and Adoration won the 2003 Breeders’ Cup Distaff from start to finish in an $85.40 upset. Adoration also won three stakes in 2004, including the Santa Margarita Handicap to give her trainer his 11th success in a Grade I race … Involved in a couple of historic events for jockeys Laffit Pincay, Jr. and Chris McCarron … When Pincay won 1992 Palos Verdes Handicap on Individualist it pushed him past Bill Shoemaker to become Santa Anita’s all-time winningest rider, and when McCarron won the ’94 Milady Handicap aboard Andestine, it was his 6,000th victory … He won the 2001 Blue Grass Stakes with Millenium Wind, who then finished 11th to Monarchos in the Kentucky Derby … Among the trainer’s other top runners have been Siphonic, Starrer, Dramatic Gold, General Meeting, Cat’s Cradle, French Legionaire, River Flyer, Northern Afleet, Awesome Again, Fighting Falcon and Raw Gold … Included in his 23 stakes victories at Del Mar are the Del Mar Breeders’ Cup Handicap twice, with Alphabet Soup in ’95 and Dramatic Gold in ’96; the ’96 Pat O’Brien with Alphabet Soup; the ’96 Palomar with Yearly Tour; the ’97 San Diego with Northern Afleet and the 2000 Grade I Del Mar Debutante with Cindy’s Hero, who was a maiden at the time, and the 2005 Bing Crosby Handicap with Greg’s Gold … Star of the stable currently is four-year-old filly Balance, victress in the 2006 Santa Anita Oaks and Las Virgenes Stakes, both Grade I races, plus in the 2007 La Canada Stakes and the Grade I Santa Margarita Handicap … Also in the barn is stakes-winning 3-year-old Desert Code … Family: two daughters; one son, Grant, who also is a trainer currently on the Kentucky circuit.
