Father, Lee, and uncle Byron were twin brothers and trainers … Grew up around Rancho Santa Fe near Del Mar … First job on racetrack was with the late trainer Willard Proctor … Worked under Richard Mandella for nine years before going out on own in 1987 … Won first stakes race at Del Mar, capturing 1987 Fleet Treat Stakes with Toulange … Has won 12 stakes at Del Mar, including the Del Mar Oaks with Stylish Star in 1989 … Clicked for six stakes wins for his chief clients, Martin and Pam Wygod, between 1999-2001 with their homebred fillies Smooth Player and Feverish … Directed the career of the double quick stakes winner Gray Slewpy, who for a time held the 5 1/2 furlong (1:02) track record at Santa Anita … Trained horses for game show host Alex Trebek, owner of stakes-winning Reba’s Gold … His other stakes winners include Fortifier, Private Persuasion, Bountiful Native, Blushing Heiress, Jacodra’s Devil and Don’tsellmeshort … Has continued his career despite being paralyzed from the waist down as the result of a motocross accident in early July, 2004. Returned to his Del Mar barn and a regular schedule six weeks after the mishap. At the subsequent October Oak Tree meeting, he won his fifth Cal Cup race with 20-1 longshot Cozy Guy in the California Cup Classic … His 2005 stakes victories included the Norfolk Stakes and Hollywood Futurity with Brother Derek, plus the Jim Murray Memorial Handicap with Runaway Dancer … Was a major player during the 2006 Triple Crown with California-bred Brother Derek, winner of the Santa Anita Derby. Brother Derek finished in a dead heat for fourth with Jazil in the Kentucky Derby after a troubled trip behind Barbaro, then was again fourth, to Bernardini, in the Preakness … Keyed by Brother Derek’s success in ’06, barn had its best year since 1995 with earnings of $1,983,464 … Family: three sons.
