Though involved with horses since her early years, didn’t take out a trainer’s license until 1989 … Earned a bachelor and master’s degree in sociology and psychology from the University of Alabama during the 1970s and went into counseling for several years following graduation … Dealt with youths in rural Shelby County, just outside of Birmingham … Loved riding horses as a child on visits to her grandparents’ farm outside of Birmingham … During teenage years, rode hunters and jumpers and showed hunters for a time … Turned to riding in the evenings after completing counseling for the day as something of an escape from her daily routine … “Horses have always been my passion,” she says … Eventually, she chose to leave counseling and join with some friends in Louisiana who were into pinhooking (buying, then reselling horses) and that’s where she got her first taste of training as she broke and trained the yearlings they bought so they would be prepared for various 2-year-old sales … Moved west in the mid-1980s, training horses at sales, working as an exercise rider and then catching on as an assistant trainer on the Northern California circuit for several conditioners, among them Mike Harte and Mark Cuoto … First victory as a trainer came in 1989 at Vallejo with a $4,000 plater named Glory Quest … Trained on her own in Bay Area for seven years starting in 1989, then shifted her base to Southern California in 1996 … Had her best year in 2006 when her horses won 42 races for earnings of $1,689,120. Major stakes contributors to her success were Foxysox, Lucky J.H. and Spot the Diplomat … Chief clients are Warren Williamson and John Harris’ Harris Farms … Star of the stable is the four-year-old filly Nashoba’s Key, who scored her fourth victory without a loss in defeating Grade I winners Hystericalady and Balance in the Milady B.C. Handicap in early June … Among her other stakes winners are Super High, Top Of Our Game, Image of Glory, Blending Element, Freeport Flight, Los Gatos, Chenille, Rhythninjava and Unlimited Value … Single.
