Has been training since 1980, when, at 20 years old, his first horse, To B. Or Not, became a multiple stakes winner and launched him on a successful career … Had good luck with a pair of sparkling racemares, Twice the Vice and Exotic Wood, both Grade I winners who became multiple-stakes winners … Also, trainee Pirate’s Revenge defeated Paseana in 1995 Milady Handicap … Has won 12 stakes at Del Mar, including the 2004 Del Mar Futurity with JayEmEss Stable’s Declan’s Moon. The classy gelding upset odds-on Roman Ruler in the Del Mar Futurity and went on to win the Hollywood Futurity in an unbeaten campaign which culminated in an Eclipse Award as the best 2-year-old male of the year. Declan’s Moon was on track to run in the 2005 Kentucky Derby after winning the Santa Catalina Stakes, but was sidelined when a chip was discovered in his left knee and has had limited success at best in comeback attempts since … For chief client B. Wayne Hughes, he conditioned Atswhatimtalknbout, a fast-closing fourth to Funny Cide in the 2003 Kentucky Derby. Minority owners of the colt included Hollywood filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Gary Ross, key figures in the making of “Seabiscuit,” the movie … In 2005, Ellis sent out Hughes’ Don’t Get Mad to win the Kentucky Derby Trial. The stretch-runner came back a week later to run a highly creditable fourth to Giacomo in the “Run for the Roses.” Don’t Get Mad later won the Indiana Derby … Took over training of the talented Buzzards Bay in mid-2005 after horse was purchased by Gary Broad for $725,000. In 2006, Buzzards Bay won All American Handicap at Golden Gate Fields in February and then Oaklawn Handicap in early April … Given time away from competition by the patient Ellis for the last half of 2006, Buzzards Bay returned to action this May, running third to Molengao in the Mervyn LeRoy Handicap, then winning the Grade II Californian … Married into a racing family: his wife, the former Amy McGee, has two brothers in the industry — Marty, a Midwest columnist for Daily Racing Form, and Paul, a trainer based in Kentucky … Among Ron’s other stakes horses have been Benchmark, Lexa, Que Belle, I Ain’t Bluffing, Glass Ceiling, Echo of Yesterday, Denim Yenem, Key Phrase, Pharma and Shake the Yoke … Served as racing commentator for the Fox TV Network for its racing broadcasts in 1998 and 1999 … Family: wife, Amy; three daughters.
