Eric is a 3rd generation horseman. His passion for the sport began while working on his grandfather’s Thoroughbred ranch in Carmel Valley, California. Eric owned his first racehorse at 22 and began his own breeding farm at the age of 28. In 1983 he began training. Eric is known in the industry for recognizing talent in young horses and developing them into racehorses. Eric’s clients benefit from over 40 years of his experience as an owner, breeder and a veteran trainer. Eric’s Grade I winners or placed performers include: Leave Me Alone selected by Eric at the Del Mar yearling sale and was purchased for $35,000. She went on to win the Grade I Test Stakes at Saratoga in 2005 with returns of over $654,000. Upon retirement, Leave Me Alone was sold at the Fasig Tipton breeding stock sale for $1,000,000 proving a huge return for Eric’s client. Bullsbay was the most expensive yearling colt Eric has ever purchased at auction for $130,000. Bullsbay went on to win the 2009 Grade I Whitney Handicap at Saratoga. Tail’sluckybusride was selected by Eric for $23,000 she went on to win the Grade I Oak Leaf Stakes, Eric’s clients turned down $1.7 million for her. Gleefully was selected at the Keeneland yearling sale for $60,000 she was a Grade III stakes winner and placed in Grade I with earnings of over $369,000. Eric’s clients went on to sell her at the Keeneland breeding stock sale for $400,000. Respectful was selected out of the Keeneland yearling sale for $40,000, she went on to run 2nd in 3 Grade II races, earning over $260,000 and was sold at the Keenland breeding stock sale for $300,000. La Nez ran 2nd in the Grade III Santa Paula Stakes at Santa Anita and 3rd in the Grade I Del Mar Darley Debutante Stakes and won in the $100,000 California Cup Juvenile Fillies of 2009. La Nez’s dam, Iza Bay was purchased as a yearling by Eric for $3,000. She herself was a California stakes winner of over $140,000. Other stakes winners or graded places performers selected by Eric, most of which he trained include: Money Lover, Whispering Hush, Triumphant Flight, Family Guy, Unbidable, Win to Win, Citypro, V’ville Lady, Madison Meadows, Keagan, Nezi O, Grimm, Fun’ngames Toknite, Iron Halo, R. Baggio, Cokes Melody, Centerofattention, No Turbulence, Without Doubt, Nic’s Eclipse, Gleefully, Resolve, St. Helens Shadow, Boozin Susan and Melanyhasthepapers. Earners of over $4,000,000. In 2009 Eric went 72.7% in the money at Del Mar and finished 4th in the trainer standings at Oak Tree at Santa Anita. In 2008 he finished second for in the money at Del Mar (57.5%) as well as 3rd for most earnings per starter in Southern California. In 2005 he finished 59th nationally for most wins by a trainer.
