Was one of Quarter Horse racing’s premier trainers before turning full time to Thoroughbreds in 1990 … Was Quarter Horse “Trainer of the Year” in 1989 … During his “short horse” days, won more than 1,200 races and 100 stakes … Won seven Grade I events with Takin on the Cash, winner of the $500,000 Kindergarten Stakes in 1989 and 1990’s sophomore Quarter Horse champion … Uncles trained “quarters” in Texas and New Mexico and he began working for them at 10 in 1959 at Sunland Park, N.M., not far from his hometown of El Paso … Moved to California in 1966 and began building a Quarter Horse stable of his own … Since switching to Thoroughbreds, his barn mainly has dealt with claiming horses, but he also usually is prominent with 2-year-olds because he buys a great number of young horses at sales each year … Leading trainer at 1992 Fairplex Park meet … Won his first graded stakes when his $10,500 yearling buy Fit To Lead captured the 1993 Santa Ynez at Santa Anita … Star of his current stable is the talented Awesome Gambler, winner of Hollywood Park’s Alydar Stakes … His other Thoroughbred stakes winners include Sea Reel, Lost In Paradise, She’s Classy, Southern Switch, Regal Groom, Double Brass, Roaring Blaze, Long Term Wish and Wind Flow … Family: wife, Sherry; three daughters.
