Started training career in 1967 but interrupted it for 17 years while he owned and operated Rio Vista, a commercial breeding farm near Atascadero, California … Returned to training in 1984 and was a force on the Southern California scene throughout the 1990s … First stakes victory came in Del Mar’s 1985 Graduation Stakes with Bolger Magic, who came back to win the De Anza Stakes later in that meeting … Grew up on Four D (for Dollase family) Ranch, a breeding farm near San Jose, California, where the legendary Silky Sullivan stood … Father, mother and sister also were horse devotees … Learned the training business under Noble Threewitt and Buster Millerick … Has been highly successful in buying horses in Europe and Florida and turning them into stars, many times for partnerships he has created … Late in 1997, became private trainer for The Thoroughbred Corp., owned by the late Prince Ahmed bin Salman, a position he held until March 1999 … Among top horses trained: Jewel Princess, winner of 1996 Breeders’ Cup Distaff and Eclipse Award winner as older filly and mare; Sharp Cat, whom he saddled for four straight stakes victories in ’98 — the Bayakoa and Chula Vista handicaps at Del Mar and the Grade I Beldame and Ruffian in New York; Itsallgreektome, who finished second in the 1990 Breeders’ Cup Mile and the 1991 Breeders’ Cup Turf and won Eclipse as top male grass runner of 1990; Career Collection, who won Del Mar’s Sorrento Stakes, California Cup Juvenile Fillies and finished second in the B.C. Juvenile Fillies, all in 1997; Deputy Commander, who won the Travers Stakes and Super Derby and finished second in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, also in 1997; Helmsman, Windsharp, Crafty Friend, Journalism, Supah Gem, Silver Music and Ten Most Wanted, runner-up to Empire Maker in the 2003 Belmont Stakes and winner of the prestigious Travers Stakes … Son Craig, who had been his father’s assistant, now runs a first-rate stable of his own … Daughter Aimee, the youngest of the Dollase clan, is a licensed trainer and serves as her father’s assistant … Daughter Michelle, formerly married to jockey Corey Nakatani and a mother of three, also has trained successfully in her father’s barn and on her own … Relocated his base of operations to Louisville, Kentucky in March of 2005 … Wife, Cincy, looks after the books and is a constant presence at the barn.
