CYPRESS, Calif. – Barretts Sales, Los Alamitos Race Course, and the Quarter Horse Benevolent Charitable Foundation announced on Sunday that they will donate to the California Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Foundation to assist victims of the wildfire that struck the San Luis Rey Downs training center in Bonsall, Calif., last Thursday.
Barretts will donate 10 percent of sales commissions at the January mixed sale in Pomona on Jan. 17, the sale company said in a statement. In addition, there will be live and silent auctions of stallion seasons, equine art and sports memorabilia that will be donated to the CTHF.
Los Alamitos owner Ed Allred and the QHBCF will each donate $25,000, while Jack Liebau, the vice president of Los Alamitos, will donate $10,000 to the CTHF, according to a statement released by the track.
The CTHF works with backstretch employees and their families. The organization is accepting donations through its website – cthfcares.org.
The QHBCF was established to aid the Quarter Horse backstretch community.
“When horsemen are in need, there is no distinction between Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse horsemen,” said Bud Alessio, the president of the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association.
