POWELL SEEKS COVER UP IN AUTUMN MISS

Leonard Powell says a quick pace would benefit Guitty in Saturday’s Grade III Autumn Miss Stakes for three-year-old fillies at a mile on grass.

The French-bred has shown no early speed in her 10 career races, the last nine in the United States. In fact, she has been victim of slow starts in five of them, yet makes her presence felt in the stretch run.

She is coming out of four straight graded stakes, including a second the Grade II San Clemente July 25 in which she missed by three-quarters of length at 19-1 under Juan Hernandez, who rides her in the Autumn Miss.

“She’s pace-dependent,” the trainer allowed. “The main thing is she needs to be covered up like she was in the San Clemente. In the Del Mar Oaks (a Grade I on Aug. 22 when she finished seventh in a four-wide trip going a mile and an eighth) she had no cover.

“I ran her back against boys in the (Grade II) Del Mar Derby, (Sept. 6, again at 1 1/8 miles) and she had cover but at the 3/8’s she got blocked and checked, and that didn’t help.”

All of Guitty’s races have come on turf, three at 1 1/8 miles, six others in the U.S. at a mile where she shows two wins at Del Mar late last year.

“She’s run well at a mile,” Powell said, “but again the main thing is we need to cover her up and she’ll finish well.”

The Autumn Miss, race nine of 10 with a 1 p.m. first post time: Mind Out, Drayden Van Dyke, 8-1; Quiet Secretary, Victor Espinoza, 10-1; Nasty, Ricardo Gonzalez, 4-1; Guitty, Juan Hernandez, 4-1; Warren’s Showtime, Flavien Prat, 9-5; Going to Vegas, Mario Gutierrez, 8-1; and Croughavouke, Umberto Rispoli, 7-2.

SMOOTH LIKE STRAIT SET FOR TWILIGHT DERBY

Smooth Like Strait will attempt to successfully negotiate the longest distance he’s ever tried in a consistent career of nine races when he runs in Sunday’s Grade II, $200,000 Twilight Derby.

“He had a nice work here the other day (five furlongs in a minute flat last Friday) with Umberto (Rispoli aboard) and he seems like he’s doing as well as he possibly could be,” trainer Michael McCarthy said of the Midnight Lute colt owned and bred by Cannon Thoroughbreds, LLC.

“He’s run well over this turf course although a mile and an eighth is a little bit of an X factor for him, but I have a feeling he is going to put up a pretty big performance come Sunday.”

McCarthy expects the bay to be forwardly placed, if not on the lead, as is his wont.

He won both the Grade III Cecil B. DeMille Stakes going a mile on turf at Del Mar last December and the Grade III La Jolla going 1 1/16 miles on the same oval Aug. 9, leading gate to wire each time.

Overall, he has a 4-1-1 record from nine starts with earnings of $277,823.

The Twilight Derby, race nine: Farmington Road, Flavien Prat, 6-1; Express Train, Mike Smith, 6-1; Margot’s Boy, Tiago Pereira, 6-1; Kiss Today Goodbye, Victor Espinoza, 12-1; Dominant Soul, Edwin Maldonado, 15-1; Smooth Like Strait, Umberto Rispoli, 5-2; Scarto, Juan Hernandez, 8-1; K P All Systems Go, Abel Cedillo, 10-1; and Field Pass, Drayden Van Dyke, 3-1.

JACKPOT CARRYOVER OF $364,453 AT END OF RAINBOW

With no perfect tickets last Monday for the 10th consecutive day, there is a sizable carryover of $364,453 at Santa Anita into today’s 20 cent Single Ticket Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot.

From a total Jackpot pool from Monday of $462,340, there were 46 consolation tickets with six winners, each worth $1,482.10.

With an eight-race card today, the Rainbow Six will be comprised of races three through eight.

SERVICES FOR BARRY ABRAMS AT 3 P.M. MONDAY

Services for Barry Abrams will be held 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 19 at Forest Lawn in Hollywood Hills.

The popular former trainer passed away last Friday at the age of 66.

Forest Lawn is located at 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, 90068, telephone 1-800-204-3131.

NEW $1 GOLDEN HOUR PICK 4

Santa Anita now offers a comprehensive betting menu including the new $1 Golden Hour Pick 4. The wager, which features a low 15% takeout popular with players, links the last two races from Santa Anita and the last two races from Golden Gate Fields each racing day.

It complements the popular $5 Golden Hour Double, which premiered earlier this year during Santa Anita’s winter-spring season.

While Santa Anita remains closed to the public due to Los Angeles County’s COVID-19 restrictions, fans can watch the live races streaming in HD free of charge on santaanita.com. There are several on-line wagering options available, including 1stBet.com, Santa Anita’s official wagering platform, which can be downloaded for free at the App Store. All of Santa Anita’s races also will be shown live on TVG.

The heart of Santa Anita’s player friendly program belongs to the early Pick 5, linking the first five races offered each day. At 14%, the popular wager features one of the lowest takeout rates in the country on a multi-race wager.  Bookending the card is a late Pick 5, featuring the last five races each day.

Santa Anita’s 20 cent Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot returns, consisting of the final six races each day. The 20 cent Rainbow Pick Six has developed a following as it has the propensity to grow into a massive jackpot pool of millions of dollars, paid only to a single ticket with all six winners.

All bets, including the Rainbow Pick Six Jackpot, have mandatory payouts on closing day, Oct. 25.

Santa Anita’s betting menu is rounded out by numerous wagering opportunities that players have come to expect from The Great Race Place, including $2 Win, Place and Show wagering featuring the lowest takeout of any major racetrack in North America, plus $1 Exactas, $2 rolling Daily Doubles, 50 cent rolling Pick 3s, early and late 50 cent Pick 4s, early and late 50 cent Pick 5s, the $1 Super High 5 and 10 cent Superfectas on all races with a minimum of six runners.

FINISH LINES: With six racing days remaining, Flavien Prat and surging Juan Hernandez are tied for the riding lead with 16 victories each. Prat is named to ride in all eight races today, while Hernandez is named in six . . . Mike McCarthy trainees continue preparation for the Breeders’ Cup, Grade I winners Ce Ce and Speech (nominated to both the Distaff and the Filly & Mare Sprint) working five furlongs Friday in 1:01.40 and 59.60, respectively, while Dirt Mile candidate Rushie also went five furlongs in 1:01.40. Flagstaff (Sprint) breezed four furlongs for John Sadler in 47.80, while Turf candidate United went six furlongs in 1:11 for Richard Mandella. In all, there were 113 recorded works this morning, six on the training track.
