ARCADIA, Calif. (May 18, 2017)–As his connections had hoped, Monster Man, a non-factor in a pair of recent one mile turf stakes, relaxed well on the lead while stretching out a furlong and easily took Thursday’s $56,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by 1 ¼ lengths under Santiago Gonzalez.  Trained by Scott Hansen, he got a mile and one eighth on turf in 1:47.03.

Close early in the one mile Singletary Stakes on May 6, Monster Man ended up fifth, beaten eight lengths.  Off at 3-1 today in a field of eight 3-year-olds, he paid $8.00, $3.80 and $2.80.

“After his last race, we didn’t know whether to shorten him up or stretch out,” said Hansen, who is based at San Luis Rey Downs Training Center.  “It’s been ‘pop and stop’ with him in his last two races, but Santiago suggested we try a mile and one eighth and this race came up for him.  We ran back a little quicker than I’d like (12 days), but I think sometimes that’s overrated.”

Owned by Gary S. Broad, Monster Man, a Kentucky-bred colt by Unbridled’s Song, notched his second win from seven starts.  With the winner’s share of $33,600, he increased his earnings to $70,555.

The second choice at 5-2, Sorry Erik, with Kent Desormeaux up, was last early and finished well to hold off favored Fashion Business for the place and paid $3.60 and $2.80.

Ridden by Flavien Prat, Fashion Business was finishing fastest of all but ran out of real estate.  Off at 8-5, he paid $2.80 to show.

Fractions on the race, set by the winner, were 22.67, 46.71, 1:10.61 and 1:34.82.

First post time on Friday at Santa Anita is at 1 p.m.  Admission gates open at 11 a.m.
